When is this blatant [apparent – ED] misuse of others people’s funds going to stop? Sounds like another Craig Thompson saga to me.

Town Council refunds $6080 “speculative” inspection fee
The Alice Springs Town Council is renowned for excessively charging developers for “inspections” that are at best spurious.
In my view they are “anti development” and usually take the stand that applications are rejected unless there is a very good reason to approve them.
They should take the view that applications are approved unless there is a very good reason to reject them.
The town is struggling economically yet we have a Council that sits in its Ivory Castle, increasing rates at levels far in excess of inflation, and puts developers who are trying to grow the town through the wringer, and in some cases into bankruptcy, due to their ridiculous conditions and high handed approach.
Also, how much money has been wasted on the ill conceived renovation of the Mall? To get there you have to drive half way around the town. Why wasn’t traffic allowed to enter from the western end of Parsons Street rather than only from the eastern end?

Framptons: reprimand slap on the wrist, says victim
Disgraceful decision. Whatever happened to “justice must not only be done but be seen to be done”.
The poor victims did not even get the opportunity to address the Tribunal or ask the Framptons bosses some searching questions. Framptons didn’t even have the common courtesy to turn up and face their accusers.
Have lost a bit more faith in the judicial system.

Stop giving young crims bail, says councillor
I have lived in this town for some considerable time and I have to say that this is the worst it has ever been.
We now have a group of teenage Aboriginal kids who are absolutely out of control and who fear nothing. I witnessed a break in the other day where the offenders were disturbed by the neighbours who rang the police.
One of the offenders then decided to threaten the neighbour with physical assault and was backed up by a dozen of his mates who suddenly appeared from nowhere. When told that the police were on their way the response was “so what – what are they going to do about it.” They then sauntered off down the road without a care in the world.
On another occasion about 20 youths formed a barricade across a road and when an oncoming motorist slowed down, his car was trashed.
Of course had the motorist driven through the group and some of them were either injured or killed, all hell would have broken out. What do you think you would have done, particularly if you had your wife and young children in the car?
I don’t know whether any of these offenders were out on bail or not and I do understand the notion of presumed innocence.
However, once they are brought before the courts and convicted, then the full force of the law should come down on them, particularly for repeat offenders.
Adult jails are obviously not the answer for teenagers under the age of 18, however a remote camp where they are taught to respect themselves, their culture and other people’s property sounds like a damn good idea. A bit of “tough love” might work wonders.
In any event something needs to be done, and it needs to be done now, otherwise this beautiful town is doomed.

Power struggle on Town Council: a sign of things to come?
Clr. Melky – I am always wary of people whose answer to criticism is “if you think you can do better then why don’t you do it”. That’s a cop out.
You are the one who put yourself up for election – not me.
Also Clr. Melky, I tend to judge people on their actions, not on what they say. So far I have noticed that you have a hell of a lot to say, but you haven’t actually done much have you?
