Northern Territory Police have charged a police officer with a number of traffic related charges, according to a media release from the police late yesterday.

It says an investigation undertaken by detectives from Major Crime and the Professional Standards Command will allege serious breaches of discipline and criminal offences have been committed.

“The charges relate to a single vehicle roll over in Alice Springs early yesterday morning involving a stolen vehicle.

“A 40-year-old constable has been charged with fail to rescue, fail to stop after a crash, and fail to render assistance.

“The officer has been suspended from duty and will face court at a later date.

“A 20 year old probationary constable is currently assisting with the investigation.”
Police did not name the constable charged.

Earlier yesterday police issued a release about a single vehicle roll-over in Alice Springs.

Superintendent Travis Wurst said five male youths, aged 15, 13, 12, 11 and 10 were injured in the crash which occurred on a dirt road near Charles Creek at about 2am.

“The vehicle was allegedly being driven by the 12-year-old when a loss of control resulted in the car rolling over and hitting a tree.

“The occupants were conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital with various injuries, none of which are considered life-threatening,” said Supt Wurst.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the night from a business in Alice Springs, sometime between 10pm and 1am this morning.

“Police had attempted to engage with the occupants of the vehicle shortly before it crashed. Investigations into this incident are continuing.”

  1. And all the while some poor bloke not mentioned in the article is now trying to work out how he is going to go about his day without the use of his vehicle, which has now been stolen and wrecked for the sake of a bit of fun. I wonder what effect this event will have on him?
