The source of the Alice Springs News Online report three days ago about Chief Minister Adam Giles splashing millions on motor sports wasn’t far off the mark.
Mr Giles announced the following grants this morning:-
$1.85m for Alice Springs Speedway and Go-karts for infrastructure upgrades.
$1m for the Central Australia Drag Racing Association to replace and extend their existing track.
$100,000 for the expansion of the Alice Springs Inland Dragway burnout pad.
$500,000 for the Tennant Creek Speedway towards a new tower and club house, as well as facilities upgrades.
“The Central Australian tourism industry and local car lovers are also the big winners from a $1 million investment in the Red CentreNATS – a brand new motorsports event for Alice Springs,” says Mr Giles.
“There’s already a huge buzz around the inaugural Red CentreNATS in September this year with 100 registrations six months out.”

A valuable lesson here for sporting groups. If you want the $ make sure you have a high ranking CLP official and Giles mate on your executive.
Mr de Brenni, can you maybe join Little Athletics or netball or soccer?
And get your mate Adam to chuck some decent infrastructure $ their way too?
I realise they don’t have as much cash to donate to the CLP as your motorsport mates but how about doing it for the kids?
From what I can read above, and if my calculations are right, there is $4.45m earmarked to motorsports.
In the same set of news on the same date in the Advocate I could read that $3m have been granted to upgrading Mental Health services.
Does our Chief Minister have his priorities right?
When we have an increase in traffic offences, speeding. Hooning drink driving or God forbid another fatal accident. Will the CM continue his support of the Red Centre Nats? In light of current comments, food for thought.

@ Melanie: Envy aside the CLPs investment into sporting infrastructure has a double edge in both improving local infrastructure and amenity while at the same time giving us the ability to attract major economy boosting events.
We are getting better and better at doing this, Alice is becoming a unique sporting location a small town with big city facilities which gives us the ability to run extremely well coordinated easily accessed events in the midst of spectacular surrounds and usually very good weather.
This is beginning to attract the attention of many events and has the potential for enormous growth, so the investment you are so concerned about, Melanie, has benefits right across the community through boosting our economy. Thank you CLP Government!
