Alice Springs is in the heart of camel country but today’s winner of the annual Camel Cup, Roman Rumma Rumma, came all the way from Melbourne and Shepparton, Victoria.

What’s more, it was his third win in a row.

p2255-Camel-Peter-HodgeOwner Peter Hodge (at right) has more to be proud of – he also had 2nd and 4th place in the Cup.

The winning jockey, Karen Catto, drove all the way from Ivoca, Victoria, to ride.

Mr Hodge lived in Central Australia for 11 years and says in the 1980s he “learned my craft from Ian Conway on King’s Creek Station”.

The nine-race fixture, in its 45th year, is one of stellar events in the Alice Springs tourism calendar.

It is run by the Apex Club of Alice Springs with support from other service and community clubs – almost all volunteers. Proceeds go to a string of charities.

An estimated 5000 spectators came through the gate on a magnificent winter’s day – blue sky and 20 degrees.
