The Imam of Alice Springs, Abdul Aziz, condemned the Paris and the Lebanon massacres, saying the perpetrators are “not Muslim” and will suffer “punishment in the hereafter”.

He spoke at a sunset vigil yesterday in front of the council chambers, where about 70 people lit candles, with the French flag flying above between the Australian and the Northern Territory ones.

The vigil was arranged by Evelyne Roullet and Coralie Petit who displayed the colours of France and Lebanon on signs they held.

The town council interrupted its meeting for councillors and staff to attend.

Deputy Mayor Steve Brown, alluding to the French ideals of fraternity, liberty and egalitarianism, said said the Paris massacre had “brought terror into our daily lives.

“We can choose in the light of what our candles mean, to take each-other’s hand, lift another’s burden or simply acknowledge another’s worth.

“We can consider the word love, not single religious beliefs.”

Imam Aziz addressed the crowd, saying “it’s really sad what happened in Paris and in Lebanon also, and what is happening everywhere in the world.

“The main message which I have to give is that terrorism does not have a religion.” (See also video below).
