Sir – Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner must end his ill-thought out gas moratorium and open up the much-needed gas reserves and create jobs for the Territory and the country.

If he doesn’t want to listen to me, I suggest he listen to his Federal leader, Bill Shorten. He is quoted in today’s Australian: “We need to open up the supply of gas, we need to get building pipelines.”

Even Mr Shorten knows Mr Gunner needs to end his silly ban and promote economic growth for the Territory.

Since the election last year the NT economy has slipped and is now second last on the CommSec State of the States report.

As Opposition leader Gary Higgins stated, after 15 years of population growth, budget forecasts show Labor will preside over a population reduction this financial year and by 2020 a decade of growth in population numbers will be wiped away.

Business is so worried about Michael Gunner’s performance, or lack thereof, that some of the Territory’s top business leaders have formed the Darwin Major Business Group to help this hapless government make good business policy.

  1. Gunna doesn’t need to listen to the Feds. He needs to listen firstly to his constituents. Gas actually won’t provide many jobs or money.
And the gas isn’t that needed, there is a worldwide glut.
And absolutely no shortage in Australia.
Fracking endangers our water supply and while gas is good to boil the kettle it won’t matter if you cant drink the water.

  2. We do not need more gas – we have solar power for almost every day of the year and should finally use this environmentally friendly ressource everywhere!
Let’s not be so last century any longer and be first in 100% renewable energy in the world!
Come on politicians, don’t be silly any longer and make it happen! Your voters want it and the environment needs clean power!

  3. “Gunna” may well be a limp clown in most areas, but one thing he has (so far) done is stop people like Scullion raping the land for short sighted returns.
Seriously Scullion? Are you smoking crack?

  4. Us long in the tooth people may well remember the Connnor plan of the 1970s to have a national network of gas pipelines to distribute gas allover the country.
It got short change at the time. In this context, you might also notice that the shortest distance from the NW shelf massive gas resource to the Eastern states is via Brewer estate and the new Tennant to Isa pipeline – a distance of around 1700 km.
Only the millionaires factory seems to have noticed this and hence their recent attempts to collar the gas export market from Melbourne, and to have a tilt at controlling our local gas supplier, and controlling the cost of transporting gas through that pipeline by the devious method of valuing its cost by various meant to justify the prices they want to charge.
It’s not called the millionaires factory for nothing. We don’t need fracking, if we need gas at all.
Morocco is but one of many emerging solar installations that can supply 24 hour power to several thousand houses. Again we are thinking behind the times.
The recently announced pumped hydro project in the Snowy Mountains is only another example of belated thinking and like massive solar, should have happened years ago.

  5. Senator Scullion (Let the gas flow) has a bit of a hide telling Territorians to listen to him and tell Chief Minister Gunner to end his ill thought out moratorium on fracking.
A media reach poll conducted by the NT News reveals that 51% of Territorians support the ban while 28% oppose it and 21% offered no opinion, with support for the ban being highest in Alice Springs, Palmerston and rural areas.
Nigel should start listening to his constituents if he wishes to serve another term in office.

  6. I find it absolutely hilarious that a Liberal should be patronizing to the NT Labor after the massive self-destruct of the Liberals in the NT.

  7. Stick to your guns, Gunner: Fracking is what the mega rich multi nationals do because they do not give a stuff about Australia and it is so good to see a politician stand up to them.

  8. Have all you solar loving do gooders considered the fact that if you have 100% solar generation (even with battery back up you need diesel or gas back up for a “Black Start” and spinning reserve in the case of an unplanned shutdown. Just look at South Australia for a bad example.
