Lightshows: nature can do it so much better

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sir, The selection of photos below were taken 20 years ago, during the summer of 1997-98 when I was living near Fenn Gap, 30km west of town. They speak for themselves, I think, but it begs the question why we need to go to the bother and expense of an artificial light show on the West Macs when nature can do it so much better free of charge…and without any disputes and controversy…

  1. Right on target Alex.
The same thought occurred to me when Mike Gillam’s outstanding exhibition ran a little more than a year ago.
The light show pales before the the natural show. And photography that can, in a profound sense, take us beyond mere spectacle has enduring value.

  2. Great natural pictures, Alex.
The artificial light show is our artificial government’s way of attracting tourists and to artificially demonstrate they are spending our hard earned taxes in an interstate company to supply the show.
So it’s really only artificially supporting the local economy.
People need to get off their bums and see the natural beauty in things.

  3. Wouldn’t it be great if the government could invest $2 million a year on a local festival instead of supporting a Sydney company to import a festival. $2 million into the local economy supporting artists, creatives, trades, all the school kids could get involved etc etc Awesome, but nah, we’ll send the money to Sydney. Pathetic!
