Police have arrested a man interstate after alleged safe crackers made off with “a large amount of cash” from the National Road Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs.
Several other suspects are still at large, police say.
The alleged burglars climbed the fence of the complex between 5pm on March 26 and 6.30am the following day, broke into the main building, and entered the shop and the office.
The manager of the hall, Liz Martin (pictured) says the offices had also been heavily vandalised and it had taken her and volunteers many days to clean up.
Meanwhile just before 3am on April 4 security personnel caught six youths in the act of breaking into the Gapview Hotel, stealing one carton of beer and four 1.25 litre bottles of rum.
And last Saturday a 17-year-old male punched two police officers several times who wanted to apprehend him for an alleged breach of bail.
The officers were treated in hospital for head injuries including abrasions and bruising. The youth was charged with two counts of assaulting police, resisting arrest and breach of bail.

  1. Lock the mongrels up and throw away the key. They should be made to go and clean up their mess as part of their sentence. Clean up everyone else’s mess as well.

  2. Had enough (Posted April 9, 2013 at 1:14 pm) which ones need to be locked up and the keys thrown away? All of them? Seems silly – just like their actions. Maybe we should lock up and throw away the keys for mongrels who make silly comments for want of being heard. You and I would be a goner!

  3. Silly it may be Charlie Dick, but its about time some accountability and restitution came into the horror crime wave the business and residents in this town have to live with.
I will be discussing what I now know with the relevant Ministers in coming weeks.
I know who broke into my place. We conducted our own private investigation and a bit of under cover with a young man we flew in from interstate who soon found himself in the right company – and came up with a list of names.
Sadly, most from well respected local families too. Obviously I cant print them here and in fact I put myself at risk of another break-in or worse by even saying so but I am over it.
So, patiently awaiting forensic confirmation and for police to do their work (who were on to it anyway).
But it’s checking out pretty well so far. What has surprised me through this is the absolute and total fear of violence caused by a strategic and deliberate undercurrent of threats of violence from hardened criminals and bullies against those who know what is going on and are too fearful to speak.
And, the way some impressionable youths are forced (by peer pressure – I know they have to make the choice) to participate so they’ll keep their mouths shut and keep doing it to stop their families being hurt.
Once they are in, they are too deep to get out and “they” are recruiting younger and younger kids all the time. Never thought I’d say this … but mandatory sentencing is the go. Three strikes and your out (or rather in). Bail just puts them out to do it again … and again … and again.
To these young men I say, do yourselves a favour and fess up. The clock is ticking for you any way and I’m not going to give up until I get full restitution.
