“PV initiatives within Alice Solar City amounted to $2.4m and saved 723,000 kWh per year.”
This works out to $3.32 per kWh per year or about 66c per kWh over five years. Solar power using this technology does not appear to be cost competitive with conventional electrical generation.
Uterne’s 100% extrapolated cost of $660m would result in net sales of $57.5m a year at current rates. Debt service, maintenance of the plant and distribution system, and administrative costs of billing and collection will mean that investors will see nowhere near a 10% return.
Solar power needs investment in better solar technologies to make it economically viable.
