Chief Minister Adam Giles said he has given instructions for the percentage of Aborigines in the NT public service to be doubled from 8% to 16%.

Mr Giles, who was speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Batchelor Institute today, said the NT has 20,000 public servants.

He said the 126 graduates should be optimistic about getting work.

The economy would go though a brief downturn as it reduces its dependence on public money, including from Canberra, and the endeavours by his government to crank up private enterprise and investment kick in.

He said half the government’s programs in the regions go to Aboriginal people.

The Batchelor Institute’s first doctoral qualification was conferred to Kathryn Gilbey (pictured with Professor Markham Rose), who completed a PhD in Indigenous Knowledges by Research. She is a staff member of the institute.

  1. Rather than taking work from taxpayers, perhaps Mr Giles can relocate work from the public service to the prison to satisfy his “Sentenced to a Job”.

  2. Organisations in each of the three tiers of government have bent over backwards for decades trying to achieve affirmative action targets for indigenous employees.
I can’t recall any that have actually achieved the goals which means that either the goals are set too high or the availability of indigenous staff sufficiently educated to do the work is limited.
What invariably happens is that the group of indigenous and part-indigenous employees who are educated hop from one organisation to another to gain salary increases, promotions etc, and any achievement of the target is transitory and illusory.
The greatest risk of course is that incompetent people will be put into jobs simply to achieve targets which is unfair to the job incumbents and those funding the organisations.
