Sir – U3A is like a fine 10 years old whiskey. It’s good for the soul, the mind and the body. It adds to the enjoyment of life.

U3A was founded in Alice Springs in 2005, in answer to a social need. U3A Alice Springs Inc. is now 10 year old. It has matured.

It stands for University of the Third Age. Third age, the time when after childhood and laboring adulthood, we reach a new stage of our lives free to choose what we want to do, keen to share our learnt knowledge and keen to learn new things.

There is to be no distinction between the teacher and the taught – members would, as far as possible, learn from each other in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere: no exams, no Uni fees, no degrees, the mere pleasure of learning.

Our scope is to maintain an alert mind in a healthy body, develop our physical and mental abilities, stimulate our intellectual aspirations, and combat social isolation and the stigma attached to “the elderly”.

On a voluntary basis, we offer a range of activities, monthly lectures by a wide range of invited speakers, and sometimes organise visits to places still to be discovered.

On Sunday, September 13 U3A will celebrate its 10th anniversary. For the occasion, members and the broader community are invited to share the festivities at a lunch to be held at Witchetty’s from 12.30pm to 4.30pm. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20. Contact the Secretary on 8952 4007 to make your booking by Sunday, September 6.

  1. As U3A started by Prof. Pierre Vellas, in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973, it is appropriate to say: “En ce jour exceptionnel, nous nous joignons tous pour souhaiter à U3A le plus merveilleux des anniversaires.
Dans notre monde, tout change, mais une chose reste certaine: U3A, au delà des mots, au delà du temps et au delà de la distance, sera toujours là pour nous.”

  2. Thank you, Evelyne – will you join us on Sunday, September 13? We can raise our glass to the future of U3A in Alice Springs.
