LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Sir – The Central Australian Football Advisory Committee yesterday recommended to AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) that the 2016 Lightning Carnival be postponed until 2017.
AFLNT has accepted the recommendation and has agreed and to start planning for 2017.
The Advisory Committee decision was based on the unavailability of Traeger Park due to required maintenance over the Easter long weekend, the traditional time of the competition.
The alternative weekend put forward, Alice Springs Show weekend, was not deemed suitable and running both events simultaneously would present a number of organisational and logistical issues for communities traveling in for the carnival and the town itself.
A number of alternative venues were considered but none were deemed suitable for hosting a large football carnival.
Whilst aware that the cancellation of the carnival will disappoint the many teams who enjoy the event each year, AFLNT will now commence planning for 2017 to ensure the carnival is a success for participants, and importantly, does not adversely impact the town.
AFLNT is focusing on refreshing the concept and giving it a higher profile to appeal to a wider group of stakeholders and participants.
In addition to gauging the interest from interstate suburban teams, AFLNT will also seek valuable input from regional councils, the Alice based clubs and community teams.
