The tiny Luritja community of Mount Liebig, population 156 and 260 kilometres west of Alice Springs, came second in the nation’s Keep Australia Beautiful 2016 Australian Tidy Towns Awards.
It received a Special Commendation for coming in at a close runner-up to the overall Australian Tidy Towns winner Triabunna, Tasmania.
Mount Liebig was also highly commended for Community Action and Wellbeing; Dame Phyllis Frost Litter Prevention, Waste Management & Resource Recovery; Heritage and Culture, and Environmental Education.
Judge Jill Grant said the town at the edge of the Western Desert presented “an impressive array of projects that have been generated to improve both the aesthetic appeal and environmental health of the community.
“This is a highly cohesive community with strong recognition of caring for country and each other.”
