The St Vincent de Paul Society has added a new charitable service to its popular store and “soup van” in Alice Springs: 10 lockers in which homeless people can store their sparse belongings.

The lockers, outside the op shop in Railway Terrace, can be accessed with a number code provided by Vinnies.

The group has 20 members and a stunning 100 volunteers.

The facility cost $23,000 and was opened on Friday by (from left) local Vinnies president Beth Madden, vice-president Sue Marshall and manager, Melissa Durston.

  1. A great initiative of St Vinnies. This will go some way to address the challenges that people without permanent places to live have to face.
A concerted effort to address the need for affordable housing and supported accommodation for people with disabilities is surely the next step.

  2. Melissa and her team do a sensational job…more power to them.
I note that the Alice Springs effort far outweighed that of Darwin’s last year and is currently far and away in the lead for this year.
The passion and commitment of the Alice Springs community leads the way again!!!
