Will you pay for this, Adam?

Sadadeen resident Julie D’Bras is asking Chief Minister Adam Giles whether he will be paying for her letterbox destroyed by a “very high powered rocket” during last night when private use of fireworks was legal.

In an email to Mr Giles, accompanied by a photograph and copied to local MLA Bess Price, Ms D’Bras says: “This is what my letterbox looked like this morning.

“You came to the Territory in 2007 so fireworks night all may still seem like fun to you.

“You are the Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, yet you put explosives in the hands of morons.

“This was a very high powered rocket that did such damage – this is not a bit of harmless fun, and it is the second box that I will have replaced in five years. Will you pay the cost of replacement?”

Meanwhile the Alice Springs police watch commander said this morning “we had no dramas at all” with the use of fireworks.

Some people may have been letting off crackers “a bit early” but there were no reports to the police of injuries nor damage.

  1. Why having regulations for the use of crackers, if it is impossible to monitor their uses?
Once again they were used all day, and probably it will be like last year for nearly all the month of July.
Some irresponsible individuals spoil the fun for all and will be happy when the NT will join the other states.

  2. @ No comment: I do not whinge, to the contrary, I only express my feelings when I see the stupidity of some called humans.
I like fun and celebrations I have been a licensed shot-firer and also know how to make them.I like explosives but I have also great respect for their uses and I have taught my children and grand children to do same.
I also respect the right of my neighbors, and have respect for rules and regulations.
May be for you it is called whinging but I least I do sign my name to my comments … No Comment!

  3. When ABC announcer Claire Martin won the election for Labor at the beginning of the century, she was lobbied to put a stop to the fireworks due to this exact problem – illegal use by pests.
She didn’t, declaring it was the right of Territorians, presumably to deafen people, worry dogs and destroy property. But who would dare argue with this entrenched “right”? Betcha Territory Labor won’t.
So pay for it yourself Julie D’Bras, and I’ll pick up the dead crackers from my street.

  4. Love the fireworks and knowing that it is only Territorians who can enjoy the pleasures we all took for granted 20 years ago.
Of course we are now getting firework tourists who come to taste the long forbidden fruits in their own nanny States.
    Rights must be defended.
It is disappointing that some of the biggest and best bungers have been precluded from sale.
I hope this is not a trend towards sparklers only in a few years.
Any politician who tries to outlaw fireworks has no future and thankfully they all know that.

  5. Banning something just increases the ignorance pertaining to its use or misuse. Dragging everything down to the lowest denominator solves nothing and promotes stupidity.
