Councillors Marli Banks and Catherine Satour have joined fellow elected council member Eli Melky as members of the Australian Country Party, according its Federal chairman, Glenn O’Rourke.

He announced in a media release late yesterday that former CLP politician and Deputy Chief Minister, Peter Chandler (pictured), had also signed up to the organisation whose motto is “for all Australians”.

“Peter Chandler brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. His proven track record speaks for itself,” says Mr O’Rourke in the release.

“The party expects to see a continued flow of former and current members of parliament and local councils across the Northern Territory joining the party as well as many new and fresh quality future candidates, who are all committed to represent the people of their electorates.”

On its website the party says it is “committed to growing an alliance of Independent MPs and candidates at Federal, State and Territory and Local Council levels, who are committed to representing the people of their electorate first and offer strong policies before politics”.

  1. Robyn Lambley, Terry Mills and others surely must join this party and start committing to real policy!
For the future of the Territory, we need a serious and focused opposition party, that moves on and rises above the failed modus operandi of the modern CLP!
If they can’t, then they must front the media and explain why!

  2. With core values including: “Policies that reinforce traditional Australian values at the time of the foundation of the Country and opposition to policies and practices which negate or undermine these values” it’s a NO from me.
Very surprised at some of those who have put their names to a program that references “so-called renewable energy”.
And “utilise Australian oil” sounds like an open door to fracking. NOT ON.

  3. “Policies that reinforce traditional Australian values at the time of the foundation of the country.” Really, that sounds very backward and quite dangerous for many in our community. Surely they can’t be serious.

  4. Ha ha, love the moniker Local 3, maybe I started something, but have not seen any posts from local 2 yet. Maybe over time we will grow, and can have a locals get together. Position vacant: Local 4.
