Three people are dead and two injured after two cars crashed in Sadadeen last night.

Police say it appears the driver of one vehicle evaded an attempted police traffic stop, drove away at speed and later crashed.

Detectives from Southern Investigations and the Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating. Sadadeen Road was closed overnight.

The 2019 Northern Territory Road Toll now stands at 35.

UPDATE 2.12pm

There were five people in the car police had been trying to stop. Three died including, so police believe, the driver.

No names were disclosed by Assistant Commissioner Narelle Beer this afternoon as next of kin had not been notified.

It is believed that none of the five are children.

The sole occupant in the second car was injured and taken to hospital, as was a passenger in the other car. One has since been released and the other, a woman, is in ICU in a stable condition.

The collision between the two cars is described as minor but the car with the five occupants hit a tree.

The vehicle had triggered an alert as being unregistered on an auto numberplate device when police attempted to stop the car at about 7pm in Undoolya Road last night, but the driver sped off. Police did not pursue the vehicle.

Comm. Beer says the incident is being treated as deaths in custody at the moment.

UPDATE 6am Dec 27

Police report that a 32-year-old woman and two men, aged 27 and 35, died in the crash.

UPDATE 2pm December 30

Police have asked occupants of these cars to contact them because they may have been witnesses to the crash.

  1. As three people are deceased no one may comment or apply blame.
In due course the coroner will express judgement.
Remember there are relatives or marriage partners terribly bereaved on Christmas Day.
No one ought to comment on a deceased person even though you may be a “liberal” person.

  2. This type of behaviour is destroying the goodness in a community and its not right for the people who live here to be restrained by being diplomatic and politically correct anymore.
What is sad is the bad behaviour and lawlessness of people destroying society because of their actions by not complying with rules that the police are here to enforce.

  3. My condolences to the families concerned (even though I probably never exchanged more than eye contact with any of them, in the times that I’ve lived in Alice and visited the (inner) west.
As a side-note to “Liberal”, I think that your timing and tone could even be considered somewhat unbecoming (as Prince Andrew famously and recently put it, albeit in a rather different context).
I’m cutting you some slack here, because I know that Alice Springs has been a perma-sauna for at least a month now – but where I live (in northern Victoria, in a rented house without air-con), has not been far behind, temperature-wise.
So please, please retract what you recently said, “Liberal” – or I’ll then have to take it as scientific fact that an extra two degrees is the tipping point between mere intermittent, too-hot grumpiness, and the completely breakdown of civil society.

  4. Breakdown of civil society, it’s happening here now.
You don’t have to make idle threats of raising the temperature two degrees!

  5. Congrats to the good people trying to find answers to what ills Alice Springs at present.
Boos and jeers to people like “Liberal” (not small l) who just like to sit on the sidelines and hang you-know-what.

  6. Sorry to be harsh but the offending driver got what he deserved. The only people I feel sorry for are the innocent people in the other vehicle.
Let me guess, the offending driver was an Aboriginal. Not being racist, just an educated guess.
Erwin, I know you might not let this post go through but we all know the truth about whats happening in this town. Why is it wrong to say how it is?
[ED – There was only one person in the other vehicle who was not seriously injured.]

  7. You may try to blame anything you wish but facts are facts. Liberal is probably correct in their comment, like it or not.

  8. In favour of Liberal. The average citizen does not create a deadly situation treating the police with disrespect and endangering your family.
If it was your child or loved one killed by this uneducated person then I am sure if you were a normal person you would be of the same opinion.

  9. This is a great site if you are contemplating coming to work in Alice Springs.
I rang a friend who lived in Alice Springs as I have been successful in a post there next year.
I am reticent to take it now and will not. I have three young kids to think about.
The way the police officer was treated by an ICAC Commissioner / Aboriginal Activists … and the last three months social issues posted is appreciated.
As I would have made a big mistake. If I was in Alice Springs I would be thanking every police officer and shaking their hands for their gallant work.
You really need these great police officers.
For me and my family it’s better to err on the side of caution.
    Good luck; Alice Springs.

  10. To the contributors of comments here:-
All men are equal and there is neither black or white, educated or uneducated but are are subject to forgiveness when life ends for that person.
Otherwise the accuser who does not forgive or understand will never be understood by God in his judgement eternally.
Race in Alice Springs includes not only the indigenous but those who are refugees from black Africa.
We are all from that same stock of “homo sapiens” but some here are not “sapiens” to know that a temporary life on earth is is only a prelude to eternal judgement.
In your comments note that family and children of the dead will be bereaved for the rest of their lives.

  11. Ken: The time has come where there is no forgiveness left in a lot of people.
Ask the business owners who have been broken into, ask the homeowners who have been broken into, ask those who have been assaulted, ask those who are not brave enough to go out at night, ask those who have their vehicles stolen.
I hope race also includes white people you did not mention. So open your eyes and have a good hard look at what is happening in our town.

  12. The three people killed were actually really good people and good parents too.
Unfortunately, people will judge them on the final act of the driver.
This wasn’t an accident, it was an act of sheer stupidity that cost people’s lives.
I also understand the frustration of the people in Alice with regards to the crime in Alice.
The three who died had jobs and were a shining light in their community.
This does not excuse the stupid act of the driver, who could have killed other innocent people with what he did.
But to put all of them in the same category as the thieves, property smashers and assaulters is not fair.

  13. There may well be innocent people in this crash. However, I do not know them.
One thing I can confidently say is I have never called a friend someone who has this type of criminal behaviour. I pay for my registration and respect you the public by keeping my vehicle roadworthy.
This fellow obviously has a record of unlawful behaviour, driving an unregistered vehicle. Disobeying lawful instruction by police. This is an uneducated mindset, irresponsible and obtuse.
When the police require me to stop I do this with respect; knowing the police are trying to weed out individuals that are irresponsible.
Anyone who has lived in Alice Springs indeed the Northern Territory knows many Aboriginal people drive unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles.
We are losing population in our towns to the eastern states, not to mention credibility, and this is one of the main reasons Aboriginal people cannot assimilate into a civilised society.

  14. @ Chris: As harsh as it may seem Chris, the old saying “show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are” rings very true.
