11 Mall trees to go

By ERWIN CHLANDA
Todd traders have been told about the town council’s tree removal and replacement plan, “informed by an independent arborist assessment and endorsed by Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation.
“We know the trees in Todd Mall are important to many people,” says the council notice which was leaked to the Alice Springs News.
“They provide shade, contribute to the Mall’s character and help shape its sense of place.
“For that reason, every tree within the project area has been individually assessed.
“Decisions about removal have only been made where necessary — based on tree condition, safety considerations, underground service requirements, or unavoidable construction constraints.”
A council spokesman says a public announcement will be made soon.
The trees to be removed shown on the plan above (red circles) are Chinese Elm (# 7, 21); Red Bottlebrush (18, 22, 42 and 47); Jacaranda (25); Ghost Gum (35 and 36); Thozet’s Box (52).
