Flood traps vehicles in carpark

By ERWIN CHLANDA

Vehicles are being retrieved from the underground car park of the multi-story 113 Building in Todd Street, via its entrance facing the river.

The carpark was inundated during the flood last week.

Outback Vehicle Recovery manager Jimmy Hapke says seven vehicles are being recovered from the 2.3 metre high space which was filled with water some 2.1 metres deep.

The pressure of the water was powerful enough to stack some vehicles on top of each-other, jamming them against the ceiling.

Yesterday truck mounted pumps were used to remove the water.

UPDATE 16:31

An NT Health spokesperson released this statement this afternoon:

NT Health’s priority is continuity of care for patients and staff safety, following flooding in Alice Springs.

In accordance with NT Health’s emergency management protocols, the Incident Management Team (IMT) has been established and is working with NT Government agencies to assess and manage building and equipment damage.

NT Health can confirm that the One One Three apartment, which is leased by NT Health for staff accommodation, has sustained some damage. The basement has flooded and there has been damage to the ground floor, which is currently being repaired by contractors.

All staff have been provided with support and those who may be impacted by the flood damage have been provided with alternative accommodation and assistance through the Residential Services unit.

While a coordinated assessment is still underway, NT Health is working to ensure health services remain operational for the community.

NT Health would like to thank staff for their commitment to care during the challenging weather conditions experienced in Alice Springs.
