Comment on The Great Alcohol Debate: Council rangers work ‘more difficult’ since scrapping of BDR, says Mayor by Ray.

Wow Russell such a response on a simple observation of mine that the litter and associated mess is getting worse, in line with the original article. For this I get a brief history of the world over the last 400 years.
I am aware of Cook sailing up and down the coast. I have been to Cooktown and the Town of 1770, so I have that part of history pretty well covered. I never invited you to inspect toileting habits, I simply invited interested readers to walk through one area that suffers from the problem that Mayor Ryan mentioned, and how his rangers noticed an increase in the amount and types of litter. Evidence to back the claims in the article, as according to you Russell, we can’t have an opinion unless we have evidence to back it up.
I am actually referring to what is happening today Russell, in 2012. I have not personally seen Englishmen running around with guns chasing the natives into this area, but maybe you have evidence of this?
Can’t afford overnight accommodation? Really Russell? I am not worried about why they are here, I just object to the litter, broken glass, drunken arguments and lack of hygiene that is occurring in our town. What modern, civilised society should tolerate this, particularly when it occurs in an area of such natural beauty that is regularly used by walkers, bike riders and runners. All of whom have a right to use this area. Before you claim I am being racist towards the “poor wretches” remember that the “traditional owners” are offended by it. These people, from Utopia, Yuendemu, Papunya and other areas, are coming into country that is not theirs, and disrespecting it. The need for basic sanitation is known by modern and traditional people. It may be that these people, who subject their own children to this lifestyle, simply do not care. There are people like this across all races, so I am not racial profiling. If you think that Aboriginal people do not have any reason to care about our standards of cleanliness and pride, please tell those communities that proudly display a Tidy Town Winner sign that their efforts are only white fella way.
You have proven you vastly superior intelligence with your dates and placements of historical events and explorers, but why do you feel the need to denigrate a person of no more than average intelligence, who simply likes to share an opinion to contribute to some of the issues affecting the place I have chosen to call home?

Thanks Dave, I do pick up the litter (bottles and cans) with my kids, and take them to be cashed in. I do this with my kids for pocket money for them. I do need to take care though and we don’t pick up the broken ones, but once again, we still seem to be picking up the pieces. All my original post was intended to do was agree with Damien, that the workload of the rangers seems to have increased, along with the litter, which is a shame.

Backing what Damian said, I have noticed a massive increase in general litter and broken bottles all around the Crown land near the Lovegrove Drive / Larapinta intersection. There are a lot more people camping, drinking and fighting. There aren’t any toilets there, and the stench rising from the blankets and discarded food items is sickening. The NT Police Superintendent’s office has discussed these issues with me following correspondence to Adam Giles, who has been very supportive. What a shame to take kids bike riding and having to put up with this filth. Unfortunately, it has got noticeably worse since the election, although it has spiked previously with events such as footy carnivals etc. These drinkers come from prescribed public housing and Morris Soak camp, but many are drifters from out of town. Please feel free to walk through this area to get first hand confirmation.

Town still upset with Stuart statue, say researchers
I am not sure if the headline is really accurate, especially if the word town is used as a collective.
I think the statue was a wonderful gift to our town, and due to the nature of the subject matter, naturally it will put some people off, but not the collective “town”.
As far as I can comprehend, there were more than 20 artists, writers and educators were involved. Did they survey a town of 27,000 people?
I really think that with a sculptor with the talents of Mr Egan, we could display a sculpture of a famous Centralian on every roundabout around town, like the Perrrente on Undoolya Road.
These could include Albert Namatjira, Noel Fullerton, Ms Olive Pink, and many other important figures, both black and white, who contributed to The Centre in some way.
Plaques could be mounted on the footpath describing who each person was.
A walking map could be produced guiding people to each one with a description. Would brighten the town and allow us to honour those that made this region what is is today.

Masked cops with assault rifles, but where are the parents?
There is no way a charge like that would ever have a chance of succeeding. This has been discussed many times ad nauseum, and the same old answer comes up.
The necessities of life, food and shelter, are provided. If the kid chooses to not take advantage of that, that’s their choice. That charge is usually reserved for the worst cases of kids locked in cupboards, covered in cockroaches and faeces, emancipated and malnourished.
So you are right, there will probably never be a prosecution on that charge ever, as it is for specific, serious cases of child neglect, not letting little Johnny run amok on the streets at night.
Is this a news report or an editorial / opinion piece? As far as tactical weapons, bear cats and masked operators go? Ha ha, what is the go with the sensationalism of late? Aircraft dumping fuel all over us, gunned up SWAT teams?
Why not use the TRG, they are specifically trained for covert surveillance and they have the specialized tools. A bit like the reports of the intervention when some media made it sound like the army was rolling in with tanks and machine guns, where it was more like skilled defence force personnel in land cruisers assisting with infrastructure.
I appreciate the in depth reporting of issues around town, you really don’t need to follow the other trashy tabloids we get here.
[Hi Ray, The piece is clearly labelled as Comment. I also draw your attention to my response here to “Ged”. Erwin Chlanda, Editor.]

Public money flowing into facility about to be closed
Can’t see it being closed any time soon. The $100m facility in Darwin will only have 12 beds, there needs to be somewhere to put the rest. I reckon at least two years until we see a new one here.

Leaders want town council help to fight youth crime
An intelligence approach would be good. Particularly with the advance of social media and the availability of apps.
Many people could not be bothered calling the 131444 number, hoping it gets answered and then explaining exactly where in Alice Spings the problem is.
Intelligence based policing would involve an app that local coppers on the beat could have that shows situations trending based on how many people report the problem.
Naturally the faster the particular report trends the faster the police could respond.
How many times do you see on Facebook sites like ASCOF multiple people commenting on the same anti social behaviours, and how many of those people have bothered to report it?
A more interactive role using the latest technology would make responses more fluid and possibly more effective.
Mind you, since the Royal Commission came out, I could see the police turning a blind eye to youths on the street, whereas a few years ago they might have called them over for a chat, engaging with them.
Now the amount of red tape involved in any youth interaction will simply too much to bear, so drive on by and pretend you saw nothing. Besides, even if it necessitates an arrest, even less will happen than it did before.
